Zanzibar, Taarab and Dhow Countries Music Academy

Taarab is a style of music from the coast of East Africa. I have been studying taarab of Zanzibar, which is an island off the coast of Tanzania. This is were you find the best taarab musicians and the best taarab music. I worked at the Dhow Countries Music Academy from May 2008 till October 2009.

I have a MD in musicology and my paper called "Dhow Countries Music Academy - Mediating Cultural Trade in the 21st Century" can be read here.

During my studies I was a part of a CD production. It is a fusion of taarab, Oriental music, Norwegian folk music and pop/jazz and it's called "Dhow Crossing - A taarab Journey" released in 2005.
